Appraisals

Appraisals are conducted by our appraisal staff using extensive research materials, network of industry experts, and knowledge of the firearms market. We examine each firearm to assess condition, research that firearm, and give written appraisal of value documentation.

Should you desire to have an appraisal on a single firearm, or an entire collection, you will be provided with 2 written copies of the appraisal, including any important notes taken by the appraiser. Each copy of the written appraisal will be ink signed and initialed by our appraiser & logo embossed, to prevent counterfeiting.

Appraisals are written using 2 different standards. One standard is using the market value of a firearm, the second being the replacement value.

  1. Market Value - this will appraise each firearm for what TODAY'S market is bearing for a firearm in the same condition with the same accessories.

  2. Replacement Value - this method will appraise each gun for the amount it would cost to replace that firearm & accessories if it were stolen or destroyed.

Notes

Firearms can be brought to us for appraisal. Appraisals will be scheduled via appointment. If you are unable to come to us or have a large collection, we can arrange for our staff to visit your location to examine the firearms for appraisal. Please note there could be some travel expenses incurred.

The firearms market is ever changing. It might be necessary to update your appraisal every few years to keep current on the values you have listed for your firearms .

It is always best to appraise your firearms BEFORE you need it. Should you ever have a fire or flood that damages your firearms it is too late. We cannot appraise on the condition a firearm WAS in, because we did not see it before the damage occurred.

FAQ's

  • Why shoud I have an appraisal for my firearms?
    • There are several reasons to have an appraisal done.

      - For insurance purposes; to add a rider to a current insurance policy or to make a claim on covered firearms (in most cases a rider to a homeowner's / renter's policy is needed to cover firearms).

      - In the case of divorce or charitable contribution, it is needed to state value of the firearms as assets.

      - Appraisals are also helpful in the case of estate planning or to sell firearms via auction or other methods.

  • How much does an appraisal by The Gun Doctor, Inc. cost?
    • Our appraisal costs are variable, based on the size of the collection. Fees are generally based on a “per firearm” basis. Due to the time involved in research antiques and rare or unusual firearms could run a higher price,

  • How can I be sure my firearms are properly insured?
    • Most insurance policies do not cover firearms or have only minimal coverage. It is best to talk with your insurance agent about existing coverage & the potential cost of a rider to cover a firearms collection. Separate insurance policies which only cover firearms are also available from a number of sources, such as the NRA for members. Similar insurance programs are available through other shooting organizations.

  • Can you appraise my firearms from detailed pictures?
    • No. To get accurate assessment of condition we need to see the firearms in person. It would be irresponsible & inaccurate of us to say that condition could be assessed via a photograph. It is important to see the firearm in person, particularly in the case of antique or collectable items.

  • I'm not intrested in an appraisal, I just want to sell my collection.
